What To Do With the Bird After Thanksgiving
Jose Mier Gastronomy is no different from your home. Here in Sun Valley, California we are going to have a lot of turkey left over after Thanksgiving. The question always arises, what can we do with the turkey to use it up after Thanksgiving dinner?
I thought about this for some time and there are a number of things I’ve done in the past like turkey soup or turkey sandwiches. Of course I also re-create Thanksgiving dinner several times over the following few days, putting together a plate of turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, etc. My brother has become famous for his turkey nachos in the days following the holiday, but that’s just the beginning of ideas for leftover turkey.
Delish.com seems to be a popular destination for me these days. Every time I look something up on the Internet there is a recipe from delish.com. This time is no exception and I happened upon their list of 35 things to do with leftover turkey. These include things like the Thanksgiving sandwich, which is basically your whole Thanksgiving dinner between two slices of bread. Other ideas include things like turkey enchiladas, and tried and true dishes like turkey casserole or turkey tetrazzini but they do get creative. Take a look at their site and you’ll see items like Thanksgiving egg rolls, and turkey cheese dip served in a hollowed out sourdough bread bowl.
Still other items include a barbecued turkey pizza and a cheesy turkey tamale pie. Let’s face it, turkey is a very versatile meat and we have plenty of it in the days following Thanksgiving. If something calls for chicken, turkey is an easy substitute. Heck, it’s a good substitute for anything including beef or pork. The point of all this is that you don’t have to go back to the same old recipes to use up your leftover chicken and a visit to delish.com or any one of dozens of food websites with give you ideas on how to be creative in your post Thanksgiving kitchen.
Dinner Then Dessert has a great recipe for turkey casserole which I enjoy. My point is there’s no end to what you can do to use up that holiday bird.
If you don’t cook, many restaurants serve up Thanksgiving dinner for those non-cookers. In Sun Valley I like to go to Hill Street Café, just across the border in Burbank at 3301 N Glenoaks Blvd.
