Chef Jose Mier Explores Another Top World Favorite
If you’re a regular reader of these Jose Mier Gastronomy posts, you know I love to showcase food from around the world and I’ve been doing so recently Play profiling some of the worlds top dishes. The next entry on our list is moussaka, probably the best known Greek dish around. Any Greek restaurant is going to serve this dish because it’s so popular.
Moussaka is similar to lasagna but without the noodles. It consists of layers of ground lamb, eggplant and top with béchamel sauce. In Greek homes it’s reserved for special occasions since it’s a labor-intensive dish. I don’t make it much myself but I enjoy it when I go out to diner the Greek restaurant.
The eggplant and béchamel sauce are you going to be soft when it comes out of the oven and it needs time to solidify so the dish is not usually served hot but rather warm.
The origins of the dish are lost in the swirling mists of time but it’s not that the dish comes from Arabs or Turks who were the ones who brought eggplant to Greece.
As I said it’s one of the most famous dishes in the world so there is no dearth of recipes available to you on the web. Likewise with YouTube (or other videos) which will guide you step by step through the creation of this celebrated Greek delight.
As I said it’s a labor-intensive dish and sometimes I don’t like to prepare myself but we in the United States are fortunate to have so many good Greek restaurants close by.
